How to track changes in Microsoft Word 2010?


Microsoft Word Track changes allow you to track any changes you have made to a document. The changes can then be accepted or rejected. This feature allows several editors to modify a document while maintaining the originality of the document.

  • Go to Review tab and click on Track Changes button to switch it on or off. (Highlighted button shows tracking is on)
  • It is easy to differentiate the changes made by different editors as each editor’s change has a different color.


  • To see tracked changes, use menus in tracking group
    • Final: Show Markup or Original: Show Markup shows the changes made by you depending on the items selected in Show Markup menu.
    • Original: Show Markup displays insertions in balloons.

    • Final: Show Markup displays deletion in balloons.


  • You can modify display of tracked changes using Change Tracking Options
  • To hide tracked changes choose Final or Original in the tracking group. Final displays the document as if all changes have been accepted and Original displays as if all changes have been rejected.
  • To remove tracked changes either accept it or reject it.
  • To accept all changes in the document choose Accept All Changes in Document.

  • To reject all changes in the document choose Reject All Changes in Document


  • To see what changes are made by which user, just mouse hover on the tracked change and a balloon showing the name of the author will appear.


  • To change the author’s/editor’s name, click on Change User Name under Track Changes.

  • To see the changes made by one user, choose the Reviewer from Show Markup -> Reviewers (select the author from the list)
